TC New Tech Law Night: Specializing in internet law, trademark law, copyright law, patent law, and other intellectual property areas.

Networking begins at 5:30, presentations start at 6:00pm. A social hour will be held immediately following the presentations.  There is no charge for the event.

Michael (Mike) Grant: U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Examiner in Art Unit 3715.  Mike will present about the general duties of a patent examiner, the organization of the USPTO in regard to art units, and a brief description of the patent prosecution process.

MJ Cartwright: CEO at Court Innovations, Inc. Title of presentation: Go to court without “going” to court. MJ will speak about Court Innovations’ Matterhorn product, which is an online dispute resolution platform expanding access to justice by bringing our court system online to resolve cases. Over 20,000 cases have been resolved through the Matterhorn Online Dispute Resolution Platform and they are just getting started!  With courts, law enforcement officers, and prosecuting offices busier than ever, online dispute resolution makes their jobs easier, faster, and more successful, while granting citizens access the court system from the comfort of their own home. Matterhorn is Software as a Service (SaaS), available from the cloud on any device connected to the internet.

Robert (Bob) Aicher: Co-founder and CEO of Zeekbeek, powered by CloudLaw, Inc.

Title: Building an online legal marketplace.  It took Zeekbeek about five years, but they have just about done it – built a national legal marketplace that is credible and ethical, with over 100,000 lawyers’ profiles being managed and hosting between 250,000 and 300,000 searches for lawyers a month in Michigan alone. Robert (Bob) Cooney: Grand Traverse County Prosecuting Attorney.  Bob will describe his experience with the implementation of an electronic case management system in his office.  Bob will discuss both the challenges and the opportunities presented by technological innovation within the public sector.

Kent Wood: Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce.  Kent leads the business advocacy efforts for the Chamber and the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance. He serves as the organization’s chief lobbyist and contact with local, state and federal lawmakers, and directs and manages the various aspects of the Chamber’s strategic advocacy and policy development efforts. Kent will be speaking on federal and Michigan government programs available for small businesses in Northern Michigan.

There is an opportunity for audience members to make technology related announcements between speakers. For instance, job openings, members seeking employment, other technology events going on in the area, etc. We will also be making some announcements related to various TCNewTech initiatives such as the fiber-optic committee, a Tech Center, etc.
