    The GTLA Bar Association is hosting a “What You Need to Know” presentation for the general public about immigrant detention and deportations. 


    Program speakers:

    •  Agnes Jury, a local immigration attorney, will present useful information about steps to take before and after detention.
    •  Russell Abrutyn, an immigration attorney from metro Detroit, will provide an overview of some common forms of relief from deportation and/or removal and paths to lawful status. He will also provide an overview of immigrant’s rights when interacting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE).
    • Michael Naughton, a local criminal defense attorney, will present an overview of rights when interacting with law enforcement agents in different setting.
    • Alline Beutler, the Traverse City Justice For Our Neighbors Site Director , will share information about the humanitarian and family based immigration services that they offer in Northern Michigan.

    The presentation will take place on Saturday, July 21, 2018 starting at 9 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church located at 222 N Cass St in Traverse City, MI 49684.


    The presentation will be recorded and posted on the GTLA Bar Association's website for viewing by those or are unable or feel uncomfortable attending personally.

    The Negligence Section of the State Bar of Michigan and the Insurance and Indemnity Section and WLAM will be co-hosting its Annual Summer Meeting at the Grand Traverse Resort on Thursday, August 9th at 5:30 p.m. 

    The Section’s summer event travels around the state.  This year, they will be at the Grand Traverse Resort at 5:30 on August 9th for a reception, at which they will present Traverse City’s own Michael Hayes Dettmer with our annual Outstanding Achievement Award.

    The Negligence Section began granting the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2008.  The list of recipients is quite impressive.  It includes Justice Elizabeth Weaver, Dean Robb, Judge Elizabeth Gleicher, Justice Michael Cavanagh, Bill Booth, Bill Mills, Pete Dunlap, Bob Siemion, Fred Dilley, and current State Bar of Michigan President Don Rockwell. 

    This event is free of charge.

    The State Bar of Michigan Alternative Dispute Resolution Section's 2018 Annual Meeting and ADR Conference, including 8 hours of advanced mediator training, will be Friday, October 12, and Saturday morning, October 13, 2018, at the Park Place Hotel in Traverse City.
